Verbal abuse is not the occasional flare after a bad day or temporary lack of verbal self-control in the midst of a tense moment. It constitutes psychological violence.

Ursinus wrote: "Christ was miraculously conceived in the womb of the Virgin, by the immediate action, or operation of the Holy Ghost, without the seed and substance of man, so that his human nature was formed from his mother alone, contrary to the order of things which God has established in nature, as it is said, "The power of the Highest shall overshadow thee" (Luke 1:35)... So we understand and believe that Jesus Christ is a real, historical man.

In my early 20s, I was very idealistic of what I thought a godly woman should be (much of it was influenced by reading books by Leslie Ludy and Elisabeth Elliot). I tried desperately to mold and shape my personality into what I thought would be attractive to other men. Coming to a Reformed understanding of the nature of justification and sanctification has been such a freeing process.

We want to be clear that discipline in the church is healthy, and at the same time acknowledge that there is abuse in the evangelical church where it misuses its authority, and where it mishandles Scripture to manipulate and do harm to Christ’s sheep.

If you or someone you know is being abused in any of the ways noted above, please get help. Never assume that a person alleging abuse is lying or manipulating. Act first and investigate later.
