There’s only one problem: taking Genesis 3:16 on its own terms we find that it is simply not a text about equal power, agency, or responsibility between men and women. After all, we have to remember where the verse is headed: “He shall rule over you.” The picture we’re getting is not that the man and the woman will be two, equally-matched opponents locked in a life-long struggle. A relationship of hierarchy and one-sided control, whether we like what it says about men or women or not, is certainly what’s being presented in this text. The question is, what exactly is the nature of this hierarchy, and how does the woman’s desire play into it?
