What people mean by “deconstruction” is that they are calling into question and even rejecting many of the doctrines they were brought up with. And a lot of young people are shaped more by media, social media, and the broader culture than they are by the gospel. The sociologist Christian Smith talks about this, saying that the religion that the youth are raised in can be called “Moralistic Therapeutic Deism.” It’s moralistic in the sense that God wants us to do good things, it’s therapeutic in that God wants us to be happy and healthy, and its deistic because God is depicted as something out there that is kind of watching over us, but isn’t involved in our lives. Many young people are brought up in this type of religion that isn’t rooted in the Word of God.
